How Do I Make a Wildcard Build?

Obtaining a specific build in Wildcard is hard. Obtaining a powerful build in Wildcard is strategy.

Creating a Wildcard build requires strategy, not luck. If you go into Wildcard mode looking for a specific build you are more than likely going to find yourself disappointed. If you go into Wildcard mode looking to maximize the power of the spells you roll you can achieve a powerful character your very first roll:

  1. Use the Dice of Destiny to find a core spell. Your end-game build may or may not use your starting spells.
    • Examples of core abilities include: Sinister Strike, Shadowbolt, Frostbolt, Autoshot, ect.
    • Any spammable damaging ability that will reliably take you from level 1-70 can be considered a core ability for WC leveling.
  2. You will level fast in Wildcard. Load a WC Leveling Template around your core ability so you can focus on leveling to 70.
    • Open Character Advancement, Select any "WC Leveling Core Spell" build, Click Activate Build and ensure Automatically Learn is checked on.
    • Your talent points will now automatically be assigned to efficient level talents. Don't worry, you will be able to purge your talents at level 70 for free to switch to end game talents. Now you can focus on leveling fast instead of stopping to search for and select a talent constantly.
  3. Understand what spells to reroll and what spells to hang on to!
    • Just because a spell doesn't fit with the build you THOUGHT you were creating doesn't mean it won't be a key ingredient to the build you ROLL.
  4. Stop trying to Roll for a Build. Learn how to Build for your Roll!
    • The build you reach level 70 with is unlikely to be what you wanted. If you want a specific build you should head over to Area-52 and enjoy the Free Pick Classless Experience.
    • The build you rolled can be grown into a powerful build faster than you imagine with just a little strategy. Check out any of the guides below to start learning how to tailor and grow your ideal build.

Core Spells

You should always look for at least one damaging spell that does not have a cooldown to focus your leveling experience around. Any of these spells can take you from level 1-70 no problem!

Core Damage Spells - Pick at Least One

Wrath Spell
Auto shot spell
Arcane missiles spell
Frostbolt spell
Smite spell
Backstab spell
Lightning bolt spell
Shadowbolt spell
Fireball spell
Sinister strike spell
Tame beast spell
Immolate spell

Core Healer Spells - Pick at Least One

It is always recommended to also pick a Core Damage Spell when rolling a healer. You don't want to find yourself solo without a way to kill mobs or quest! Whenever possible, you should try to roll Life Tap at level 1 as a healer.

Rolling Renew with a Hardcard Holy spell or Rejuvenation with a Hard Cast Nature spell is nice, but not necessary. You can create a full healing build that will carry you through dungeons leveling and at level 70 with just a hard card and the right talent picks!

Healing touch spell
Holy light spell
Life tap spell
Greater Heal Spell
Healing Wave Spell

Core Tanking Spell

There are three main tanking starts you can build around. Bear Tank, Two-Handed Tank or Shield Tank. Tank builds can be some of the easiest builds to start due to the weighted system outlined in the Wildcard Game Guide.

Bear Start

The only requirement for eventually rolling a Bear Tank is obviously Bear Form. Bear Form combined with Swipe is enough to level from 1-70 no problem!

Swipe Spell

Two Handed or Shield Start

Both these tank builds rely on Defensive Stance to build, and even if you are planning to build around a shield tank, you can level more quickly as a two-handed build while still rolling shield abilities to make use of at level 70!

Defensive Stance and Thunder Clap is enough to tank any dungeon level 1-70, but Defensive Stance and any Core Damaging ability will allow you to level 1-70 while rolling your key tanking abilities just fine.

Thunder Clap Spell
Shield Bash Spell

Load a WC Leveling Build in-game for fast leveling

Once you have rolled a core ability based on your intended(but not necessarily final) start you are ready to load up a level build! This is especially useful for new players who want to focus on reaching end-game. The build loaded will automatically assign your Stat Specialization and allocate your Talent Essence to efficient talents based on your core ability!

Open Character Advancement with 'N' or clicking the scroll icon on your mini map.

What and When to Reroll Spells

You can typically upgrade a mediocre build into a great build just by strategically using the Scroll of Fortunes you earn while leveling and unlock with the Mark of Ascension you obtained while questing in Outland. The trick is knowing which spells to reroll, when to reroll them and which spells synergize well together.

You can learn more about Scroll of Fortunes and how to earn them in our Wildcard Game Guide

Avoid rerolling spells that may grow with your build

Most builds rely on only a few key spells. You may start your journey with Sinister Strike, Battle stance and Rend with goals of being a dual wielding badass and roll Shadowbolt at level 10. You might say bad roll, but you have over 20 more spells coming. By level 50 you find yourself with Immolate, Conflagrate, Corruption and Shadowbolt for a great caster dps build. You may find yourself Corruption and Shadowbolt by level 20 and decide to pick up Master of Shadows. The key is making the best with the rolls you are given, not seeking out specific rolls.

Now imagine if you would have rerolled Corruption right at level 10, then pulled the Shadowbolt at level 20? You would have missed out on combining Sinister Strike with the Nightfall talent for an incredible shadow melee build!

Master of Shadows wow

A sinister strike start is always 2 rerolls away from combining Master of Shadows and Nightfall for massive instant cast Shadowbolt damage!

Hang on to universally powerful spells

Some spells may not be optimal for your build, but no build suffers as a result of rolling Nature's Grasp or Blessing of Kings. You may keep these spells as you continue to optimize your build at level 70, but you should hang on to spells that generally improve your build or add situational tools until you find they are the least impactful spell in your build.

Nature's Grasp
Purge Spell
Disengage spell
Mage Armor spell

When to reroll before level 70

The only time you should find yourself rerolling before level 70 is to prevent weighted rolls you know you don't want. You can learn more about weighted rolls in our general Wildcard Game Guide.

If you choose to ignore this guide and decide to pursue a specific build in Wildcard, you can save your Scroll of Fortunes and use them all at the level your desired spell first becomes available. If you are looking for Windfury Weapon for example, you may want to use your Scroll of Fortunes at level 30 for the highest chance of rolling Windfury Weapon. If you don't get it don't fret though! Just follow this guide. Your character is ruined. You will have plenty more Scrolls of Fortune by 70!

Welcome to level 70. Your build is about to improve FAST!

Your build at level 70 will always be a bit wonky, with quite a few spells you probably won't even bother putting on your action bars. That fine. Those spells will quickly roll into general power spells, and after a dozen or so rerolls(that you should have if you have been saving your SoFs and questing in Outlands) you will find your build full of spells that grant you general power and utility or situational power!

The key to rapidly improving your end-game wildcard build is:

  1. Identify your core rotation. Many core rotations rely on relatively few spells, but are enhanced by a huge variety of supporting spells.
    • Rend Overpower can be an entire core rotation supported by auxiliary spells.
    • Shadowbolt Corruption can quickly grow into a monster casting build.
    • Arcane Missiles Moonfire is a powerful single target and AOE build on its own!
  2. Explore Legendary Enchants to identify potential synergies you may be unaware of!
    • Many Legendary and Epic Enchants create brand new synergies between spells.
    • Many Rare enchants offer massive damage bonuses to spells to create surprising synergies.
  3. Reroll redundant spells first!
    • If your core rotation is centered around Fireball and Frostbolt. It's generally safe to reroll a spell like wrath. Odds are if you will never be casting Wrath over either of those spells. Reroll spells you are unlikely to ever cast!
  4. When your entire build is full of general power spells or situationally powerful spells you can start rerolling the least powerful of these spells.
    • Mage armor is a great example of general power. 2% magic reduction is a benefit to any build. Pure and simple it makes you most powerful. But if you are you a PvE melee focused Hero you will reach a point where Mage Armor is actually doing the least for your build out of all of your spells.
  5. You will quickly reach a point where it's a struggle to determine which spell is the least useful in your build.
    • As you reroll your least powerful spells you are more likely to see them become undesirable spells.
    • It may feel like a bummer to reroll Mage Armor into Fireball into Blessing of Wisdom on a melee focused build, but by the time you are rerolling your rerolls, your build is powerful enough to engage in whatever content you desire.
    • At this point you are simply fine tuning, and rolling new and powerful spells is no longer a massive leap in power, but a minor upward adjustment.
  6. By the time you reach step 4 and 5 your build's power will largely be determined by Mystic Enchants, Talent Investment and skill as a player. Step 4 and 5 make up the smallest gap of power between builds. Rerolls will still help you increase in power, but you will find most leaps in power from your choices.
    • You will now find the largest power gains no longer come from Scroll of Fortune, but from optimizing:
    • Master your build. Create strong macros, set up weakauras, learn your rotations.
    • Choose the right Mystic Enchants.
    • Optimize and Synergize your Talents
    • Gear for your build
